Whitecaps losing streak extends to four after 2-0 road loss to Sporting KC

KANSAS CITY (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps goal scoring woes continued in a 2-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City.

Neither team was able to generate much offensively in the first half until Sporting KC forward Jacob Peterson put one past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted off a corner kick, giving the home side the lead.

Vancouver’s first shot on goal came in the 51st minute. Forward Giles Barnes had a great chance to tie it, only to be stopped by Sporting KC keeper Alec Kann.

The visitors would keep the pressure on, but Kann was equal to the task. He made a great save on Whitecaps defender Kendall Watson’s header in the 55th minute to keep his team ahead.

Less than 10 minutes later, the game had some controversy. Sporting KC was awarded a penalty, and Benny Feilhaber was stopped by Ousted. The secondary official said Ousted had moved off his line early, and the penalty was retaken.

Feilhaber made no mistake on his second try and put his team up 2-0.

Vancouver has one goal in their last five league matches, and remain winless at Children’s Mercy Park.

The Whitecaps (8-12-6) are two points behind Portland for the final playoff spot.

They play Sporting KC again in Scotiabank Champions League action at BC Place on Tuesday.
