Search for missing hiker in Chilliwack enters week 2, family holds out hope

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – One week after Gordon Sagoo went missing on a hike in the Cheam Mountain range, his closest family and friends held a tearful news conference to let everyone know they haven’t given up hope.

Sagoo, 50, was hiking with two friends to Baby Munday Peak on Aug. 14. He ventured ahead of the group and disappeared, prompting an extensive effort from Chilliwack, Port Coquitlam, Surrey and Lions Bay search and rescue teams.

“The search teams have brought in everything from dogs to drones, we haven’t found a single trace,” Sagoo’s niece Manpreet Gill says through sobs. “We know there’s only one reason for this, we know he’s still out there.

“The search hasn’t been called off, but they’ve tapered off some of the efforts only because they’re just as baffled as we are as to where he could be,” she adds.

Over 100 community members filled an upstairs room in The Sapphire Bistro as Sagoo’s loved ones delivered their statements.

His daughter Amandeep describes the past week as a “nightmare”, adding “this is the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. But through everything I’m thankful my dad has raised me to be the strong person I am today … in my heart I know he’s out there fighting to come back home.”

Sagoo was part of a running group called “We Run Mas”, and fellow members are quick to mention his physical fitness.

Running mate Ed Kumar says Sagoo once ran 183 kilometers over two days. He adds that hikes like the one Sagoo went missing on were routine, which is why his disappearance is so puzzling.

The family has launched an online fundraising page, as well as a separate fundraiser for Chilliwack Search and Rescue. Gill says if the current search is called off, they hope to use some of the money raised to fund a private search.
