New drug could be to blame for spike in Vancouver overdoses

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s supervised injection site is dealing with an unusually high number of overdoses over the last 24 hours.

Workers are concerned there’s a very dangerous substance out there.

Day shift workers have reported ten ODs needing intervention and the night shift saw four.

Insite would normally handle one to three.

Manager at Insite Neil Arao says it stands to reason this is happening outside the facility’s walls as well.

“There’s a substance that’s circulating that they’re unfamiliar with, that they haven’t seen before. It’s being related to potentially being the reason for these overdose spikes.”

Insite will be running 24 hours per day for the next period to cover the time when most receive their social assistance payments.

Arao recommends users come to them so if they do OD, there’s someone there to help.
