Hottest tech gadgets ahead of the school year

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As kids get ready to head back to school in a couple of weeks, many parents will be out picking up some of the latest gadgets to make things easier for their children. But we have some tips from a tech expert on exactly what you should be looking for when you’re perusing the aisles.

Any parent can tell you that when it’s time for kids to start school every year, there is usually a lot of talk about what new tech toy to buy.

Breakfast Television’s Tech Specialist Mike Yawney says it’s important for parents not to get too carried away. “If you do get carried away thinking, ‘Oh, that’s really cool! My son or daughter can use this,’ but really think about it. Will my child really use this? Is this really going to help them with their studies?”

One gadget that kids will probably love is the new IRISPen which is a scanner that lets you run it across lines in a textbook and it converts them to note form on a tablet or laptop.

Meantime, a new survey from BDO Canada finds students heading into university in September are getting a failing grade when it comes to setting a budget.

Debt expert Donna Mihalcheon says the habits usually start at home by watching parents and then we don’t learn how to budget in school. “I think we’re teaching things backwards today. We don’t teach them to save for things and then buy. We create the purchase and then we figure out how we’re going to pay for it.”

She adds students need to sit down, work out a budget and stuck to it. And don’t just pay the minimum on credit cards or you’ll find yourself in a heap of credit card debt on top of student loans.
