Busy wedding season disrupted after Ross Street Temple damaged in fire

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Imagine your wedding is coming up and you’ve just learned your venue and place of worship has been severely damaged by a large fire. That is a reality for a number of couples in the local Sikh community after an early morning blaze at the Ross Street Temple in South Vancouver.

The temple had already been booked solid for those celebrations for the rest of the summer and during the same period next year.

Temple President Sohan Singh Deo says other plans will have to be made. “We’ll see. We have to consult with them how they feel. We can arrange something but we have to talk to them.”

He describes how he and others in the community are feeling right now. “Very bad. We are feeling very sorry for those people because there is a wedding tomorrow.”

The good news is no holy books were damaged in the fire, but some prayer sessions will need to be held elsewhere.

The fire, which broke out at about 2:30 a.m., comes months after about $2 million worth of renovations inside. No one was hurt and investigators are still trying to figure out the cause.
