Small businesses worried about Canada Post labour issues

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The potential work stoppage at Canada Post is looming over many small businesses across the country.

Small businesses won’t wait to see if Canada Post will be operating or not according to Dan Kelly with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. “That’s causing a lot of business owners to have to look at alternatives now because they can’t risk having their packages tied up en route to their customers in the mail.”

Kelly says this might mean businesses will pay more for courier service and he warns that Canada Post workers need to pay attention to what’s happening. “As customers look at these alternative arrangements some of them are never going to return to use Canada Post and I’ve got to say that should worry the union.”

He adds technology has eased the blow to a lot of companies because more services can be done online. “What a lot of businesses are doing on the payment side is to move to email invoicing and electronic forms of payment and that’s where Interac e-transfers can be helpful.”

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued a 72-hour strike notice yesterday, but it’s still not clear how or if service would be disrupted.
