Major changes to BC’s school curriculum coming in September

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This school year will be a little different for parents of kids from kindergarten to grade nine with the introduction of BC’s new curriculum.

It will cover the basics of all subjects while allowing kids to dig deeper into the subjects which interest them most.

BC Teachers Federation President Glen Hansmen expects some adjustments will happen as the year progresses. “I think everyone understands from the ministry to school districts that implementation isn’t going to happen evenly, that it is going to take time to think through things. To have the professional conversations at the school level.”

Hansmen explains it includes some parts of Canada’s history which have been overlooked. “You’ll see a whole bunch more content around the history and traditions of BC’s Aboriginal people, this is long overdue, teachers 100 per cent support it.”

Big changes to the grade 10 to 12 curriculum come next year, including the elimination of provincial exams.
