Last scheduled weekend closure for the Pattullo Bridge

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Drivers and business south of the Fraser will soon be breathing a sigh of relief. Full construction closures of the Pattullo Bridge are ending after today and that means drivers won’t have to find an alternative route with all four lanes due to open Monday morning.

Work is wrapping up more than a month ahead of schedule, which is good news for those commuting across the river. The daytime closures have been happening regularly since April and were supposed to last until October.

Anita Huberman with the Surrey Board of Trade says some businesses have been harder hit than others. “Especially our trucking companies, our courier companies, you know all those types of businesses that are going around the region to do business and traffic has been backed-up. It has been frustrating.”

“I think the shopping centres, you know even MetroTown, Central City in Surrey, they are going to see an immediate benefit out of this bridge and I think it is going to be good all around.” she adds.

Delta’s Police Chief Neil Dubord says more people have been taking the Alex Fraser Bridge during the repair work, causing issues on Annacis Island.

He believes the re-opening of the Pattullo will help. “So we expect it to go back those normal levels but we are still dealing with some of the extra people taking a short-cut through Annacis and we hope to be able to deal with that with our officers there.”

Dubord says this couldn’t come at a better time. “Once everyone gets back from summer holidays, after Labour Day, is typically some of the busiest days on the road over the course of the next several weeks.”

Overnight work will continue into the fall as crews try to extend the life of the bridge, due to be replaced by 2023.
