Local MP wants feds to help pay for seismic upgrades of BC schools

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The feds should chip in to help with local seismic upgrades argues the NDP member of parliament for Vancouver-Kingsway, as more than 100 schools throughout our province await those improvements.

“Very often, it is the neighbourhood school that is designated as the emergency gathering point for the neighbourhood,” says MP Don Davies. “So, we could very well be asking people to rush to a place that could collapse on them.”

It’s the province that’s responsible for education funding, but Davies says schools are more than just places for kids to learn, and the feds should cough up some cash to help get them ready to handle an earthquake.

“We know there’s a big seismic event coming,” says Davies. “The irony of having those very schools being subject to collapse in an earthquake present a really difficult situation.”

Davies plans to introduce a bill with this request next month.
