Could a third crossing to the North Shore help commuters?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The back-ups to and from the North Shore are another aggravation for many commuters, and the idea of a third crossing over Burrard Inlet is a solution suggested every few years or so. Could ever see another bridge between the Iron Workers Memorial and Lions Gate?

Director of SFU’s City Program Gordon Price says you have to consider exactly what intersections the bridge would land at on either side. “You have got to be specific then you begin to see what the implications are for the idea of spending several billion dollars just to move the congestion just from one point to another.”

He points towards the congestion problems at the Lions Gate, “from our point of view it is somewhat of a solution. You have got to actually limit the amount of traffic that can pour into a place like downtown Vancouver or Lonsdale, there is an upper limit on the traffic.”

He says unless you build a new corridor through Vancouver — like the failed freeway proposal of the late 1960s — the traffic has nowhere to go. Price would rather see more transit and alternative commuting options to help ease congestion.
