Pot dispensary name change not deterring Delta’s shut down efforts

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – A crafty move by a North Delta marijuana dispensary hasn’t phased the city’s efforts to shut it down.

The BC Supreme Court ordered WeeMedical Dispensary Society to shut its doors earlier this month.

WeeMedical says they complied and then sublet their space to WeeCare Med Society.

Director May Joan Liu wrote in an email to NEWS 1130 that WeeCare is “an entirely different legal entity according to the law,” but Delta Mayor Lois Jackson isn’t buying it.

“I think the courts will realize it’s, well let’s put it frankly, it really is an attempt at an end run,” Jackson says. “So we’ll continue enforcing the law and we’ll take whatever steps we have to.”

Jackson says the city is committed to following the law on the current illegal status of marijuana in Canada. The city had a previous court injunction on WeeMedical.

It’s still unclear whether WeeCare will force Delta to start the legal process all over again.
