SPCA supports province-wide dangerous dog registry

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – Following a violent pit pull attack which left an elderly woman seriously injured, several organizations are coming out in support of a dangerous dog registry.

The Union of BC Muncipalities will vote on registry bylaw at its meeting next month, while a Maple Ridge councillor is also making a push for stronger rules on the subject.

SPCA policy and outreach officer Amy Morris says her organization “really supports perminant identification of all dogs, especially dogs that are deemed dangerous, as a way of being able to track them as they travel between municipalities and regional districts.”

She adds that existing regulations have too many holes.

“Often if someone has a dog that has attacked or bit another person or another dog, they might disappear. They might move to another place, and all of a sudden, that entire record is lost.”

Yesterday, a 70 year old woman was caught up in a fight between a pit bull and her small dog, and suffered a deep gash on her hand. White Rock’s Acting Mayor says the woman is now recovering at home.
