Front Street re-opening pushed back again

By

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – It’s more frustration for drivers and businesses along Front Street.

The City has once again delayed the re-opening of the road. The thoroughfare has been closed since February as a part of a plan to remove a parkade to make the street more pedestrian friendly.

Eastbound traffic is now expected to open up on September 6th, while westbound traffic should start flowing again on September 9th.

Roger Emanuels with the City of New Westminster says the work was supposed to be done by today, but crews with CN Rail have some problems building a new bridge.

“They’re re-doing foundations in order to replace their span. They ran into thicker concrete and their drilling is taking longer than expected.”

He apologizes to the people impacted by the ongoing closures.

“It is unfortunate, but as I say it’s out of our control with the CN work.”

Emanuels doesn’t expect any further delays.
