BC NDP leader laughs off accusations of flip-flopping

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – The leader of the BC NDP says he hasn’t changed his position on pipelines, despite suggesting earlier this week he’s now ‘open to persuasion’ on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain project, even though he came out against it back in May.

And John Horgan believes it’s laughable for Christy Clark to accuse him of flip-flopping on the controversial issue.

He says he remains opposed to the project. He says he was asked about an economy where people were going paycheque to paycheque. “And that our position remained the same, and then I said, ‘I believe that the public wants leaders that are responsive to changing circumstances. And as circumstance change, leaders should be responding in the public interest.’ That was my comment. That was the intent. That was the context.”

“I said that I could not see the Port of Vancouver as an expanding, export port for crude oil. I said that clearly at the day of the interview. I’ve said that clearly for months and months and months.”

He says any leader should be able to respond to changing circumstances, but Clark is the one that keeps reversing her positions. “She said that a ferry route to Bella Coola wasn’t in the public interest and then she said two days ago that a ferry route to Bella Coola is in the public interest — there’s no bigger flip-flop than that.”
