Tsawwassen Mills mall short-staffed two weeks before grand opening

TSAWWASSEN (NEWS 1130) – Retailers of a new mega mall on the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve are still struggling to find employees ahead of next month’s grand opening.

Despite hosting two job fairs to hire roughly 3,000 people for 150 shops, the mall has hired only around half of their needed personnel.

“Most of those positions are some of the part time positions,” general manger Mark Fenwick says, adding retailers are responsible for finding their own employees. “I’m confident that they will find the staff, leverage their existing resources and be ready to open on Oct. 5th.”

Limited transit may be contributing to the staffing shortage, as people weigh long-distance travel against minimum wage jobs. Fenwick says they will introduce a shuttle for staff between Scott Road Station in Surrey and the mall.

“This will help fill in an identified gap in the existing public service. That will be starting up for opening and running every 30 minutes,” he says.
