High security in place for Royal visit in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s an event that you’ve known about for weeks and that’s been in place for months. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Vancouver today, making stops at Jack Poole Plaza, the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station and on the city’s Downtown Eastside.

Many of you may be thinking about trying to catch a glimpse of the pair or maybe even a meet and greet, but that comes with a warning.

Vancouver Police Acting Sergeant Brian Montague is pleading with people to use some common sense. And what he means is don’t drive to the venue because there won’t likely be any parking. Give yourself lots of time and don’t leave something, like a bag, unattended or it may grab the attention of local officers or those from across the pond.

“There are protocols in place to ensure safety. Our Emergency, Operation and Planning Section looks at everything very closely and comes up with a plan. And in some cases it requires the removal of garbage cans and newspaper boxes and that sort of thing, and in some cases it does not. But that’s all looked at.”

He stresses the safety of everyone, and not just the Royal family, is paramount. “There is a risk assessment done for every visit by a dignitary whether it’s the Royal family or the President of the United States or somebody else — we get these visits fairly regularly in Vancouver.”

Police don’t expect too many traffic disruptions but as always NEWS 1130 will keep you in the loop with updates every 10 minutes on the ones.
