VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – A group of politicians will make a public plea to the federal government, urging Ottawa to halt the Kinder Morgan Pipeline project.
Victoria’s mayor points out we have heard similar requests come out of the same event before. The last two years at the annual Union of BC Municipalities convention.
In both cases, there were actual resolutions passed, disapproving of what the mayors called an inadequate review process by the National Energy Board.
Mayor Lisa Helps says the cities are united.
“Vancouver, the mayor of Burnaby and a number of others wrote a letter in 2015 saying that we were very dissatisfied with the National Energy Board consultation process. We were hoping that the ministerial panel would have improved, and in fact, it did not.”
They’re once again asking the government to halt the project until a proper assessment can be done.
“We are hoping for better and we feel that there is no way the federal government should approve this pipeline, given the inadequate consultation, in particular with our First Nations in British Columbia and along the pipeline route.”
The Kinder Morgan Pipeline would pump crude through the Burnaby terminal.
