Gerhard Richter painting owned by Clapton going up for sale

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A painting by the German artist Gerhard Richter owned by British singer-songwriter Eric Clapton is slated for auction.

Christie’s is offering “Abstract Painting” in New York on Nov. 15. It’s estimated to fetch about $20 million.

The exuberantly colorful and textured oil-on-canvas belongs to a four-part series from 1994. One is in the joint collection of the Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland.

Clapton acquired the other three at auction in 2001. One sold for $34.2 million in 2012 and a second for nearly $20.9 million in 2013.

The one in the upcoming auction can be viewed Oct. 1-6 at Christie’s London.

Last year, a 1986 painting by Richter, also called “Abstract Painting,” sold for $46.3 million. It’s an auction record for a work by a living European artist.
