Online accusations against Funtopia ‘not correct’, RCMP says

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – This could be another example of why you should never immediately believe what you read about online. A Surrey indoor play facility is defending itself against a barrage of negative comments online over a post about an incident RCMP say is “not correct.”

The post making the rounds on Facebook and on online moms’ groups details a report of a sexual assault of a child at Funtopia on 124th St in Surrey in December.

People commenting are accusing Funtopia of refusing to provide certain evidence to RCMP. Many are saying they will be boycotting the business.

Surrey RCMP says the information in the post is not factual. They say the report was investigated and no charges will be recommended. They assure public safety is not at risk and because there are no charges, little else will be said about it.

Funtopia’s owner is defending the reputation of his business, saying they in no way impeded the investigation.

Some of the commenters accuse Funtopia of purposely deleting surveillance camera footage. The owner says they do have cameras on premises even though they aren’t required by law to have them, but the tapes are erased automatically after seven days. He says storing footage indefinitely isn’t possible. It would take too much memory.

The owner says he has been told his employees were not considered suspects. He adds rigorous background checks are done on everyone who works there.

The owner says they shared all available potential evidence with RCMP when it was requested. He is hoping RCMP can make a statement on the case so Funtopia’s reputation can be saved, but Mounties say privacy concerns make that impossible.
