Conditional sentence for man who attacked nurse ‘unacceptable’: union

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – A man who attacked a nurse at an Abbotsford hospital will not serve time in jail.

Ryan Stard pleaded guilty earlier this year to assault causing bodily harm for the March 2015 attack on a male nurse at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The provincial court heard there were mitigating factors that contributed to the attack, including mental health issues.

Stard was given a conditional discharge and three years probation in court on Tuesday.

The BC Nurses’ Union President Gayle Duteil calls the judgment unacceptable and disappointing. “This is a serious issue and it will be an election issue next year as well I can tell you for the provincial government and we will take our call to the federal government.

“We are going to do everything we can….to change the laws so that this type of sentence does not happen again,” she adds.

She believes this outcome sends the message that it’s okay to beat up health-care workers.
