Environmental assessment to be done after tug fuel spill

BELLA BELLA (NEWS1130) – Wildlife assessments are slated to begin on the coast of the Great Bear Rainforest where a tug has sunk, spilling oil into the waters.

A report by the federal and provincial governments, local First Nations and the tug company released Friday says the tug was loaded with over 226,000 litres of diesel fuel, and so far, only 26,000 litres have been pumped out of its tanks.

While crews try to control the spill, two of the tug’s fuel tanks have been continuously leaking since it slammed into rocks on Thursday.

The report says wildlife officials have arrived at the scene to assess whether any animals have been affected, and help with the cleanup.
