Sutter scores the shootout winner as Canucks beat Flames in season opener

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Brandon Sutter scored the only goal of the shootout in the fourth round giving the Vancouver Canucks a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames in their season opener.

Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout before Sutter beat Flames goalie Chad Johnson for the winner.

Calgary opened the scoring on a fluky goal. With a delayed penalty against the Flames, Ryan Miller went to the bench for the extra attacker. Newly signed Loui Eriksson had the puck near centre and attempted to pass it back to Erik Gudbranson, but the puck went past the defenceman and into the Vancouver net.

The game stayed 1-0 until late in the third when the Sedin’s and Eriksson put on a clinic. The line kept the puck in the Calgary end for 1:34 before Daniel Sedin beat Johnson to send the game into overtime.

Miller made 25 saves in the win, while Johnson stopped 29 out of the 31 shots he faced.

Vancouver is back at it tomorrow at home against former Canucks goaltender Eddie Lack and the Carolina Hurricanes.
