BC justice system improving, but more work to be done: report

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Our justice system continues to improve, according to an updated report released this afternoon.

According to lawyer Geoffrey Cowper’s update to his report “A Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century,” justice services are more affordable than they were and things have been simplified to an extent.

“In the past four years there has been real progress in reducing back logs, implementing modern systems and working together to find innovative solutions,” says Cowper. “What impressed me the most was the determination to continue with making the system work better over-all and to achieve lasting improvements.

“There is a good deal that needs to be done, but British Columbia is proving a leader in modernizing criminal justice.”

But NDP justice critic Mike Farnworth says many people still have trouble with legal aid.

“The ability of some of the poorest and most vulnerable in our society to not even be able to access legal aid has some real negative consequences for people in British Columbia,” he says.
