Winnipeg Indigenous platform launches in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Fed-up with mainstream media’s portrayal of Indigenous stories, a Canadian magazine hopes to catch your attention.

The Winnipeg based publication Red Rising Magazine launched in Vancouver Saturday.

Co-founder Lenard Monkman says they want to bring together Indigenous stories and perspectives.

“There are a lot of Indigenous people that are going through exactly the same kinds of things across the country,” Monkman says.

“The way that we reach people is through social media. We’re using the internet as a tool to connect with our people. Indigenous people across the country are staying connected with each other and their stories in the news through social media and the internet.”

The quarterly magazine launched their fourth issue this weekend and intends to publish its fifth edition in February.

Monkman says people on the West Coast may remember Red Wire Magazine from the 90’s.

“It’s sort of a continuation of that but we’re bringing different perspectives — we’re living in a little bit of a different time but a lot of the issues that were happening 20 years ago are still very much the same as they are today.”

Red Rising Magazine is run by a volunteer group of Indigenous youth from Treaty 1 territory.

Monkman says they’re looking for Indigenous writers, artists, and leaders from all over Canada to share their stories.
