Fentanyl forum in Abbotsford tonight

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Police in Abbotsford hope parents come out to hear what they have to say about a potentially deadly drug that’s being blamed for hundreds of overdoses across BC this year.

Investigators are hosting a forum on fentanyl tonight at 7 p.m. at the MCA Auditorium in City Hall.

Constable Ian MacDonald doesn’t think enough people are talking about the growing drug problem in the Fraser Valley. “We’ve had four homicides in Abbotsford this year, and that’s obviously too many. But when you compare that to the illicit drug overdose deaths, which is sitting at 26, it pales in comparison.”

He’s also hoping tonight’s discussion breaks the misconception that drugs aren’t just a problem on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “We look at the list of victims, not just of overdoses, but regrettably fatalities and it runs across the board. It’s people from every walk of life, every age group — this isn’t something that is just targeting hardened drug users,” adds MacDonald.

The speakers include police officers, representatives from the Fraser Health Authority and a clinical specialist in mental health and substance abuse.

Tonight’s event runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 32315 South Fraser Way.
