School funding a sign of fake progress for new, unelected trustees: BC NDP

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC NDP Leader John Horgan says the Liberal government is using previously promised earthquake upgrade announcements as a way to smooth over Vancouver School Board (VSB) issues during the election.

The latest funding announcement involves Lord Tennyson Elementary in Vancouver.

Horgan says promises from 2013 shouldn’t just be fulfilled during campaign season.

“The closer we get to an election, the more politics you get from Christy Clark. You see no action for years and then all of a sudden she’s sprinkling dollars around and firing newly elected people because they have been critical of how she has administered education.”

He believes this announcement is just a sign of fake progress for the new unelected trustee to waive around.

Horgan says the squabbles between the VSB and the province have been caused by a lack of sustainable funding.

“What I’ve learned in my time in the Legislature and in public life or as a citizen is that when people offer themselves up to make the community better, we should help them not get in the way.”

Horgan expects even more announcements from the Liberals in the coming months because this is election season.
