Canucks hope to leave the Coyotes howling this evening

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canucks struggles this season are well documented, but this evening offers a perfect opportunity to turn things around with a game against the Coyotes. Arizona should be tired after losing to the Calgary Flames last night in overtime. The Coyotes have lost three straight, so if Vancouver can’t get up for this game, the writing is likely on the wall for Coach Willie Desjardins.

It is 18 games into the season, but Vancouver has never had a lead after the first period. Bo Horvat says it is crucial the Canucks get off to a good start tonight. “It is definitely is going to be an important thing for us to start out well tonight. It is a back-to-back for them so if we come out strong and good in the first period and hold a lead for once instead of chasing the game, it will be better for us.”

The Coyotes are last in the NHL with just 11-points, but a win would pull them in to a tie with the Canucks for the basement position.

Jacob Markstrom gets the start in net for Vancouver. He will be trying to bounce back after being shelled for seven goals against on Tuesday. Ryan Miller has the flu and will be unavailable to back up the Swedish goalie, so the team has called up Michael Garteig from the ECHL’s Alaska Aces. The Prince George native knows he probably won’t play, but he still calls it a dream true.

“It is very exciting obviously. Any opportunity to get called up is an exciting one. For a kid from BC, it is a dream come true. I am going to relish the moment and let is sink in and go from there.”

The puck drops at 7 p.m. and you can watch the game on Sportsnet Vancouver.
