Lions struggle with fan support despite winning record

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We told you earlier this week about the economic impact the Vancouver Canucks’ losing season is having on local businesses.

Even despite a winning record, one of the city’s other pro sports teams is struggling with fan support.

It’s not that the BC Lions aren’t winning.

“They got what? A little over 20,000 last Sunday for a playoff game, so it is sad,” says John Svelka with Vancity Sports

It was actually less than 20,000. Now the Lions face the prospect of a dwindling fan base despite a winning season.

“Look at the Lions. They’re winning and you can’t give merchandise away.”

He says he hardly sees any shirts or jerseys out on the street.

“We have jerseys and hats and everything on sale for the Lions and again, you don’t see any gear walking around hardly at all,” says Svelka. “And they’re winning, that’s the sad part. They’re winning, they’re playing an exciting brand of football, and they’re still having a hard time hooking up with the fans.”

He says customers are leaning towards Major League Baseball and NFL merchandise or even non-Canucks gear.
