Surrey breeder charged with animal cruelty

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A Surrey animal breeder who also operates a pet boarding facility has been charged with animal cruelty.

Marcie Moriarty is the SPCA‘s chief enforcement officer and says the organization seized 67 cats and 15 dogs in distress in February. The cats taken into BC SPCA custody were primarily Persians and short-haired exotics. The seized dogs included four French bulldogs, a Boston terrier, a Pomeranian with three puppies, a Chihuahua, a poodle, a Rottweiler, a Doberman, a Jack Russell terrier and a shiba inu.

She says a small number of animals needed to be put down while others have since been adopted.

“In this particular situation, many of these animals suffered from very extensive medical problems. The cats had what’s called a ringworm.”

“The BC SPCA has a history dating back to August of 2012 and in total we’ve executed [more than] three warrants removing animals from her custody,” added Moriarty.

If convicted, Ivy Zhou could receive a fine of up to $75,000, two years in jail, and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
