VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Days of fresh snow can always be risky in the backcountry for the weekend.
There are warnings up for the higher elevations in the local mountains.
It’s the first weekend for Avalanche Canada forecasts, with high danger rating up for the Sea to Sky region in the alpine
But generally, forecaster James Floyer says the high amount of snow we received this week is a good thing.
“We like having a lot of snow arrive early on season when it’s relatively warm, we tend to get more problems when we have a little bit of snow on the ground and we have very cold temperatures, so if anything, we’re setting our selves up for a pretty good winter right now.”
Foyer says this weekend is a good time for those heading into the hills to play it safe.
“In general terms, that new snow appears to have bonded fairly well to the existing snow surfaces. We’re not anticipating anything unusual but just ease into things a little bit, don’t centre-punch the biggest, deepest slope that you can get out straight away.”
Avalanche Canada will now start with their daily forecasts, including for the new South Coast region that encompasses the North Shore Mountains and Squamish.
