Stanley Park lit up for the 19th year tradition of Bright Lights

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – For the 19th year, a Christmas tradition is about to light up Stanley Park.

The annual Bright Lights kicks off on Monday – all for a good cause.

It’s all for the Burn Fund, with over 600 local firefighters donating their time to set up and work the display

But the fact its for charity hasn’t stopped thieves from targeting the area.

Retired firefighter Ray Boucher says they’ve now got a 24-hour security guard after getting dozens of strands stolen last year.

“It’s frustrating more than anything and especially when you’re a charity and, you know, it’s not like we recklessly leave things out, but we do leave things out and I think it’s… you know, we’re not used to covering our butts all the time, we’re more used to just being trusting.”

He says they have over 3-million twinkling lights ready to go tomorrow, with a few surprises in store this year.

It runs nightly from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. as of Monday with some matinee hours on weekends until January 1st.
