Miller sensational in Canucks shootout win over Leafs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Ryan Miller was great making 38 saves in the Canucks 3-2 shootout win over the Maple Leafs.

Daniel Sedin opened the scoring just over 13 minutes in when his point shot deflected off Toronto defenceman Roman Polak past Frederik Andersen. It stayed that way until the second period when Sven Baertschi took a slick pass from Alex Burrows and beat Andersen five-hole.

The Leafs didn’t go away quietly and carried much of the play from that point on. Toronto finally capitalized when James van Riemsdyk scored on a power play to cut the Canucks lead in half.

Then, early in the third period, number one overall pick Auston Matthews tied it up when he one timed the puck past Miller.

Toronto dominated the third period, but Miller was on his game, keeping the Canucks in it. The Leafs carried the play in overtime as well, but the Vancouver netminder made a couple of big saves to get the game into a shootout.

Markus Granlund and Bo Horvat scored on their attempts and Miller stopped Tyler Bozak on Toronto’s third shot giving the Canucks the win.

There was a lot of hype coming into this game because the two teams combined for 171 penalty minutes in Toronto last month. The only fight happened in the first period between Erik Gudbranson and Matt Martin.

The Canucks kickoff a five game road trip in New Jersey on Tuesday.
