World Juniors will bring a business boost in 2019

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It won’t just be hundreds of young hockey players descending on Vancouver in 2019.

What does this week’s World Junior tournament announcement mean for businesses in the Lower Mainland?

The tournament will take place in both Vancouver and Victoria, with tens of thousands of visitors expected to descend on the two cities in 2019.

And Ty Speer with Tourism Vancouver says it won’t just be British Columbians taking in the action.

“It’ll be both Canadians and people from outside Canada. Absolutely we’d expect to see lots of in town visitors from out east and Alberta and other parts of Canada,” says Speer.

“From a supporting red and white point of view we’ll get lots of Canadians, but at the same time, there’s no reason for us to be shy about going after hockey fans int he US. We should see some terrific cross-border traffic.”

He says it won’t just be hotels seeing a boost, but expects bars and restaurants, as well as normal tourist attractions like the Science World and the Aquarium to see a big jump in winter numbers too.

This will mark the 13th time Canada hosts the tournament, including this year in Toronto and Montreal getting started on Boxing Day.
