‘You’ve got to relax’: Former transit exec talks potential Evergreen issues

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Bringing in a new transit line like the Evergreen always sees its fair share of problems.

NEWS 1130 is talking to the man who helped launch the Expo Line 31 years ago about the potential bumps down the track.

Larry Miller was the Chief Executive of BC Transit when the first SkyTrain car ran along the tracks in 1985.

He says he’s been part of several line openings around the world, and says the trick is to not overcompensate for any early problems.

“I’ve been there for those days and different systems…You’ve got to relax. You can’t overreact because you can afford to overreact because that costs you money and you can’t afford that,” says Miller.

“The trick is to relax and let it work. the system you’ve designed is based on sound information and it will work fine when it’s allowed to.”

He says the biggest challenge they faced in 1985 was the staggering amount of volume they got the first week, but doesn’t think TransLink will face that this time since the larger system is already in place.
