Class action lawsuit proposed against Armed Forces

By

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – There’s a call for more people to join a class action lawsuit centered on complaints of discrimination, assault, and harassment against women and members of the LGBTQ community in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Nicola Peffers is one of those who claims she was assaulted by peers and superiors.

“I reported complaints through all the proper channels. I did not receive justice. The perpetrators remain — their ranks and reputations intact.”

Lawyer Natalie Foley says the Forces failed to protect people, like her client Peffers, who claim they’ve been abused while serving their country.

“It has come time for the law to protect those who protect us,” says Foley.

“The perpetrators of abuse and misconduct in the Armed Forces are often higher in the chain of command and can inflict professional repercussions on those they victimize.”

According to Foley, women and members of the LGBTQ are more likely to face this type of abuse. Lawyers say the purpose of this suit is to change culture in the Forces.
