Vancouver, Coquitlam sanitation crews play catch-up ahead of second snowfall

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver have been watching their trash pile up in the days since Monday’s snowfall.

Now, sanitation departments in Vancouver and Coquitlam are racing to catch up before the next big winter storm hits.

“The challenge we have is not with the main roads, it’s with the laneways and the alleyways where a lot of the pickup is done, and a lot of those are still very, very icy,” says Vancouver Waste Management Director Albert Shamess. “We don’t want to be damaging people’s property or putting the drivers or the public at risk.”

He says they’re aiming to be back on schedule by late Thursday, when snow is expected to start falling again. Further delays are expected, especially for northeast Vancouver, where trash pick-up day is on Friday.

“If we get snow as predicted maybe on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, we might be pushing into early next week to try to get caught up,” Shamess adds.

People in Vancouver are asked to be patient, and to leave their trash outside until crews can pick it up.

In Coquitlam, people are asked to bring their carts in at night, and put them out again in the morning.

Sanitation departments in Burnaby, Surrey, and Richmond say they have not seen any major pickup delays so far.
