Local group collecting coats and blankets for the homeless

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With these current frigid temperatures, you’ve probably pulled a few more layers out from the closet but what about your old blankets and coats that always seem to stay in storage?

The Muslim Association of Canada is gathering your old belongings in order to help keep the homeless stay warm in Metro Vancouver.

The organization’s Tarek Ramadan says it’s all about giving back. “We want to target it on a bigger scale because we can see that the cold is really striking quite early with the harsh weather for the people who have no shelter and nowhere to go.”

He adds collecting old coats and blankets for those less fortunate is all about paying it forward. “There are people who care in the community and the whole Muslim community is definitely interested in offering and extending a hand to help these people.”

The initiative is now in its fifth year helping the less fortunate in the area.

The association is collecting donations between now and December 17th. You can drop items off at their offices at 2122 Kingsway in Vancouver.
