US VP in Ottawa for final official visit

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – US Vice President Joe Biden is travelling to Ottawa today for a quick and final official visit to Canada before the new administration of Donald Trump takes over the White House.

The VP will touch down this evening and will be honoured with an official dinner being hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just off Parliament Hill. Tomorrow Biden will sit down for a one-on-one with Trudeau before heading to the first ministers meeting to address the provincial and territorial premiers.

Liberal MP Wayne Easter, who is the head of the Canada-US Parliamentary Committee says he thinks Biden can offer some insight on the transition to Trump White House. “The advice would be along the lines of, ‘How do you maintain this strategic relationship that we have with the United States, both on everything we do with NORAD and defence, trade and all the other issues that we have between us.'”

Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau is looking forward to the visit for the same insight. “Perhaps sharing his perspectives in this time of transition. I’m not going to speculate on what he’s going to have to say to us. I’m sure we’ll have an opportunity to speak to him and ask him some questions. I think it’s going to be very valuable.”

Trudeau and Trump don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on major issues like the environment, trade, and immigration, but both have said they will work together to maintain a strong relationship.
