Man pepper-sprayed after meeting Craigslist buyer: Richmond RCMP

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Richmond are trying to find a suspect after they say a 39-year-old car dealer was pepper-sprayed and robbed when meeting someone he found on Craigslist.

Just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, RCMP were called to Turnill Street after getting reports of an assault. When they showed up they found the victim who had placed an ad to sell a 2009 Mazda Tribute SUV on the website.

Police say they both agreed to meet so the suspect could see the car and it’s after the victim handed over the keys that the suspect pepper-sprayed him and took off in the car. The car was last seen travelling north on Turnill Street.

The victim is expected to be OK.

The suspect is described as white, 5’8″ tall, in his 20s, with curly brown hair. He was last seen wearing a dark jacket with the word ‘Security’ on the back, a dark hoodie underneath, and a reflective cross safety vest.

The car is white with a dark grey leather interior and the headrests are missing from the rear seats. Police believe the BC license plate started with the sequence ‘D649.’

“We would like take this opportunity to offer some suggestions for potential sellers and buyers using online services like Craigslist, Kijiji, Facebook, and so on. The vast majority of transactions are honourable but it is a good practice to be cautious,” says Corporal Dennis Hwang.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604.278.1212 or CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
