Vancouver mayor weighs on city’s snow removal plan so far

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has nothing but praise for city crews handling the region’s first major snowfall in a number of years.

“I think the city’s done well. It’s the first, kind of, major snow incident in several years, so, we have been literally out of practice because it hasn’t snowed for so long. It’s been tricky with the slush and freezing, back and forth, up and down, above and below zero, so, I think city crews have done really well.”

He says crews have worked really hard through the night for many days and nights and they’ve been going at it, keeping the main thoroughfares, working on sidewalks and bus stops. “I think we’ve got a good battle plan, staff are really motivated to be on top of this one, and I think we’ve done well this time. It’s always a challenge and, hopefully, we’re through the worst of it now.”

And what about plans moving forward? “Our staff team will definitely review how it went. It’s really important for people to call 311 and give us feedback or use the VanConnect app and just let us know if we miss something, if there’s some places we can improve, we want to be sure that we do this as well as we can and make sure the city is safe when we have ice and snow on our roads and sidewalks, making sure we hit the hot spots is always key, but we want to be sure. If people see something, just let us know, 311, and we’ll do better next time.”

Environment Canada says we can expect up to five centimetres of snow this weekend.
