Best local neighbourhood in which to survive a heart attack

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Researchers at UBC say people who suffer a heart attack in Metro Vancouver are more likely to survive the life-threatening health risk in predominantly Chinese neighbourhoods. And that’s because, as the study concludes, there are certain areas that seem to have bystanders way more willing to perform CPR than others.

The folks at the university looked at roughly 1,600 cardiac arrests in Vancouver, on the North Shore and in Richmond between 2007 and 2011 and found areas like Kitsilano, Strathcona, and Central Richmond offered the best chances of surviving a heart stoppage without suffering brain damage.

The study discovered areas with the highest rates of people stepping in to perform CPR seem to be in neighbourhoods that tend to be predominately Chinese. While the West Side, East Side, and Southeast Vancouver were all regions that did well beyond living within an area that’s roughly 2.7 kilometres in proximity to a hospital.
