Christy Clark ends the year on a popularity upswing: poll

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – It looks like Premier Christy Clark is finishing off 2016 on a high note, according to a new survey. A new poll by the Angus Reid Institute puts her at 35 per cent job approval, second only to Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall and Manitoba’s Brian Pallister.
“Look, if you are a glass half-full kind of person, one would note that that represents a fairly solid uptick for Premier Christy Clark over previous quarters,” explains Angus Reid Executive Director Shachi Kurl. “Remember, she was as low as 27 per cent earlier this spring.”
Kurl figures the government’s tax on foreign buyers of homes in Metro Vancouver may have had something to do with it, as well as allowing the City of Vancouver to bring in its own tax on owners of empty homes.
“We have seen the premier and this Liberal government go from basically a perception of [appearing] to be unresponsive and tone-deaf on an issue that has been affecting a lot of Metro Vancouverites to, at least, being seen to take action,” she says.
“Regardless of whether or not it’s effective, [it] was quite popular.” On the other end of the spectrum is Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, who say her popularity dip to 16 per cent in this latest survey.
The next provincial election is May 2017.
