Don’t leave your pets out in the cold: SPCA

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The cold stretch we’re in has most of us bundling up in heavy jackets, scarves, and hats but just like us, pets can be affected by the plunging temperatures.

Marcie Moriarty with the BC SPCA says it’s not a good idea to leave your pet outside or in a car for extended periods of time. “You want to be very mindful that when you take them out for exercise, that you’re conscious of the fact that they don’t have winter boots on and so their feet get cold.”

Moriarty adds it’s important to avoid heavily salted sidewalks. “Salt can be toxic to — or very painful at least — for pets if it’s not a pet-friendly version that’s being used on the sidewalks.”

As you’re coming in from a walk, check the pads of your dog’s feet to make sure there isn’t anything stuck that could be irritating.

Meantime, Environment Canada has issued an arctic air warning for the Fraser Valley, including east of Chilliwack. “As a result, cold outflow winds have developed through Howe Sound and the Fraser Valley. As temperatures fall tonight, areas exposed to outflow winds will see wind chill values near -20,” says the agency.

You’re being encouraged to dress in layers and expect these temperatures to stick around for the rest of the week.
