Canucks can end the calendar year on a three game win streak in Edmonton

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Canucks can end a rocky calendar year on a three game winning streak Saturday night in Edmonton against the Oilers. (7pm, CBC)

Henrik Sedin scored in overtime to cap a comeback victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night, and that victory has Vancouver just four points out of a wild card spot in the Western conference.
Meanwhile, the Oilers are enjoying a solid season thus far with 19 victories and 44 points in the standings, as they hold a playoff spot in the Pacific division alongside San Jose and Anaheim.

Connor McDavid is always at the top of the marquee when the Oilers are on the ice – the second year star is producing at a better than point per game pace with 42 in 37 games, including 29 assists.

McDavid enters Saturday’s action tied for the league lead in scoring with Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

North Vancouver’s Milan Lucic has enjoyed riding shotgun with McDavid this season, and is already in double figures in goals with 10, to go along with 15 assists in 37 games.

The Oilers have a ton of skilled forwards up front, something that Ben Hutton knows all too well, and alluded to it last night after the win over the Ducks.

“That’s going to be a test. Edmonton is a big strong team, and they’ve got some tough players, like McDavid, so we’ve got to come out with our work boots on and execute our gameplan.”

Hutton’s head coach echoed the same things.

“They’re (Edmonton) a big team. They’ve got lots of speed, they’re hard to handle on a back to back. We know what to expect, we know they’re gonna be good, and we know they’re gonna be ready, it’s a big game for us.” Willie Dejardins said.

Jacob Markstrom will start in goal for Vancouver after Ryan Miller backstopped the Canucks to wins over the Kings and Ducks this week.

Saturday marks the second meeting of the season between the two division rivals. The Oilers took the first meeting 2-0 at Rogers Arena on October 28th.
