Icy streets, power outages persist after NYE snowfall

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Icy streets and darkened homes persist across the Lower Mainland today after a New Year’s Eve snowfall brought up to 15 centimeters of snow to some areas.

Some 72,000 BC Hydro customers have been without power at some point since the storm.

The power company says about 3,000 outages remain, mostly in West Vancouver and Bowen Island. Crews and contractors will continue to work throughout the day.

Meanwhile, some side streets are more like skating rinks after a coating of slush froze into an ice sheet, and with daytime highs expected to barely graze the freezing mark throughout the coming week, it’s a problem which won’t go away on its own any time soon.

More snow is in the forecast for the weekend as well.

On the bright side, operations at Grouse Mountain are back to normal today after an outage there last night led to huge delays getting off the hill.

The Skyride was running on back-up power, so it took a lot longer to get skiers, snowboarders and others down.
