Richmond City council considers licensing for short term rentals

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – After receiving numerous complaints, Richmond City council is moving towards regulating short term rentals like Airbnb. If approved, owners would be required to pay a yearly licensing fee, only be allowed to host six guests at a time, and the property would have to be the principal residence of the owner or operator.

Richmond Mayor Malcom Brodie says rules like these are needed to stop what he says are common complaints. “The extra vehicles, the extra people. The comings, the goings. Strangers in your neighbourhood at all times of day and night in any kind of numbers. There can be noise issues with parties or other loud situations. Those are the kind of impacts.”

City council is expected to vote on the issue on Monday night. If approved, the public consultation process will begin in the coming months.
