City of Vancouver responds to incoming cold snap

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s been an unusual winter for city workers across the Lower Mainland but specifically in Vancouver where they’ve had to deal with a major snowfall almost every week. The more than month-long winter blast has also brought out critics who have slammed city hall for, what some feel, is a poor response to plowing and clearing side streets.

Engineering GM Jerry Dobrovolny says once the season ends they’ll be looking at what could have been done better. “Cold weather stays for quite an extended period of time and so we didn’t have the usual melt that we normally get. But certainly at the end of this year we’ll do a debrief to see ways to improve.”

He adds the snow-clearing costs have put a strain on the city’s contingency fund which may have to take money away from other things.

This afternoon City Manager Sadhu Johnson, Jerry Dobrovolny, Vancouver Fire Chief John McKearney, ICBC and the city’s director of homelessness services will hold a news conference to update the media and public on its plans to handle the next blast of winter weather.

NEWS 1130 will have a reporter there and you can check back later this afternoon for an updated article.
