Snow, ice causes dangerous driving conditions in the Fraser Valley

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Another blast of winter weather is hitting the Fraser Valley and treacherous road conditions are keeping police very busy.

Most of the snow has been landing east of Chilliwack, while black ice has been reported in both Chilliwack and Abbotsford. “I think that some of the motorists today were relieved that, apart from the snowpack conditions that have been present for the last week plus, they can see the road. The bad news is, they can’t see the black ice that’s on it,” says Constable Ian MacDonald.

He adds 80 per cent of the calls coming into the Abbotsford Police dispatch board are to do with crashes caused by slippery road conditions.

His advice is to take it slow and give yourself plenty of distance between your car and other drivers.

This morning classes were cancelled in the Chilliwack and Fraser Cascade School Districts. Environment Canada has a warning in place for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt. A snowfall warning with totals of about 15 centimetres are expected before it turns to flurries this afternoon.

As always highways, roads sidewalks and parking lots will likely be icy and may become slippery. You are encouraged to slow down.
