Some of Canada’s most popular malls are in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two of Canada’s three most profitable malls are in Vancouver, even though the region’s population is much smaller than Toronto.

Oakridge Mall at Oak Street and 41st Avenue in Vancouver generates the second-most revenue per square foot of space at $1,537 in the 12 months ending in August 2016. It’s followed closely by Pacific Centre in Downtown Vancouver at $1,523, according to new research by the Retail Council of Canada.

Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby generates $1,035 a foot, good enough for eighth place, while Richmond Centre sits in 13th and generates $928. Guildford Mall in Surrey is 21st at $844 and Coquitlam Centre is 27th at $785.

The industry group says Metro Vancouver has more of Canada’s top malls per capita, six out of 30, than any other region in the country.

Number one on the list is Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre with revenue of $1,651 per square foot, the only one to top $1,600.
