VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Reality TV star Kevin O’Leary entered the Conservative Party‘s leadership race this past week, a day after the party’s french-language leadership debate.
O’Leary doesn’t speak French, something that is practically required of the Prime Minister so, exactly how quickly could he hope to master the language?
Taking an in-depth crash course in the language isn’t as uncommon as you may think.
Government employees often need to get proficient in a hurry says Valentine Morin with Alliance Francaise Vancouver.
“And they do only french tutoring in private lessons and it takes 16-hundred private hours,” says Morin. “Thirty hours a week, so 55 weeks…usually it takes a year and a half full-time.”
That works out to around 55 weeks if you’re putting in 30 hours every seven days.
“If he’s doing political speeches and everything, then I would say a year and a half minimum full-time,” he estimates. “At every lesson, the four skills, speaking, writing, reading and listening. And you have to add after a few months the interacting, so five skills.”
And it’s not known how much time O’Leary is dedicating to the cause.
